The Surprising Practice That Has Made Me a Better Interior Designer

Friends, it is a true honor and dream to be able to wake up each day and not only love what I do, but to also be recognized by my clients as being able to match (or even exceed) what they’ve dreamed of when it comes to transforming the interior of their homes.

When most folks think of improving their craft, they usually picture studying for a new certification, hiring a mentor, or rolling up their sleeves and letting good ol’ experience lead the way. Each of these have been instrumental in helping me grow in their own right, but the one practice that I’ve started that I had no idea could change my experience in such an impactful way is:

Yoga.

Yes, Yoga.

No, that’s not a typo.

Family Yoga at Lifetime Fitness

Yoga has been such a game changer for me not only as an interior designer, but also as a person. I look forward to spending that daily time with myself to reset and recharge for the day, and in return it has gently shifted the perspective from which I work. Here are the top three areas that I’ve noticed the most transformation:

  1. Yoga has restored my ability to truly be mindful while in a new space. Each home that I enter is unique and I aim to be fully clear and available to become one with my clients’ most intimate areas.
  2. Yoga has restored my ability to be present and grounded so I can really serve my clients. It is important to me to absorb both what my clients vocalize as well as the simple nuances that are harder to describe when they share their vision for transforming their home.
  3. As yoga restores my sense of contentment with my own life, I’ve noticed an indirect transfusion of contentment into the design process with the families I work with. Most clients start the design process assuming that ‘brand new’ is the preferred method to facilitate change in their home, but in so many cases there is still so much beauty to be found in identifying and transforming what they already have! I’ve created some of my favorite transformations simply embracing and enhancing the best of what a client currently has in their home.

The result of allowing yoga to transform my mindset daily has been my ability to deliver clients the zen based kitchen or bathroom that truly speaks to the core of how they wanted their space to look and feel. It’s been immeasurably rewarding!

Do you have a daily practice that helps encourage you to be the best version of you? If so, I’d love to hear more about it!
